AUGUST 08,
1992-2023

Def Jam Recordings artist August 08—who, in addition to his vast solo material, has written songs for DJ Khaled, Ty Dolla $ign and Wale—died on 8/28 at age 31. His cause of death hasn't been disclosed.

In a statement obtained by HITS, Def Jam CEO Tunji Balogun marveled at August 08's talents as not just an artist but "a connector, a collaborator and a bridge builder in the creative community," continuing, "He selflessly gave his time and energy to fellow creatives—writing, producing, recording and sharing his incredible talent, which spanned multiple genres and sounds. He was a true presence at Def Jam, one of those artists who would pop up at the office or shoot you a text in the middle of the week just to check in. I know that we all felt connected to him and we will all miss him deeply."

Balogun noted that the initial shock still hasn't worn off and encouraged everyone to "come together as a family to collectively honor his memory and make sure the wonderful musical gifts he left us can still reach the world."

He also vowed to work with August's team and family "to ensure that Def Jam commemorates his life and work in the most appropriate way," adding, "We will be working with UMG to provide access to mental health and grief counseling for all members of our staff—please reach out to my office if you feel the need to take advantage of these resources. Losing a loved one is never easy, but let us always remember August’s magical personality, generous heart, enormous spirit and otherworldly talent. He will always be a member of our family."

A Los Angeles native, August 08 (born Ray Jacobs) co-wrote DJ Khaled’s #1 hit “I’m the One" f/Justin Bieber, Quavo, Chance The Rapper and Lil Wayne in 2017. The following year he signed with 88rising. In July 2022, he became the first signee to Jhene Aiko’s Allel Sound label, on which he released his Towards the Moon EP. Other collaborators included Duckwrth, Kyle, Smino and GoldLink. August 08's latest single, "Bruises," was released earlier this year.
