Denzel Washington’s The Equalizer 3 shoots straight to the top of the weekend box office chart as the summer season tops $4b in ticket sales.

Equalizer 3, co-financed by Sony, TSG and Eagle Pictures, pulled in $34.5m over the weekend, with a projection of $41m once the Labor Day tickets are counted. It’s the second-biggest Labor Day opening, behind 2021’s Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings ($75m for three days; $94.6m counting the holiday).

Barbie became the highest-grossing film of the year over the last week, pulling in $612m in North America and $1.36b globally.
