The Top 5 Highest-Grossing Films in America Over the Weekend

According to Box Office Mojo, Universal and Illumination's The Secret Life of Pets 2 was unable to deliver even half of the opening the first film saw back in 2016. The new X-Men flick—Fox's Dark Phoenix—also underperfomed while earning a measly 22% at Rotten Tomatoes. That said, this weekend's Top 12 still managed to outperform the same weekend last year by more than 43%.

1. The Secret Life of Pets 2 (Universal) $47.1m 4,561/$10,329 avg. (debut)
2. Dark Phoenix (Fox) $33.0m 3,721/$8,869 avg. (debut)
3. Aladdin (Buena Vista) $24.5m 3,805/$6,439 avg (week 3)
4. Godzilla: King of the Monsters (Warner Bros.) $15.5m 4,108/$3,783 avg. (week 2)
5. Rocketman (Paramount) $14.0m 3,610/$3,878 avg. (week 2)
