Katy #9 debut of year

FUN WITH NUMBERS: In the continuing discussion about the first-week performance of Katy Perry’s Teenage Dream (see 9/1p item below), here’s more grist for the mill: The 194k units tallied by the Capitol/EMI release makes it the #9 debut of 2010 and the second biggest from a Pop artist, behind the 283k registered by Justin Bieber’s My World 2.0 (Island/IDJ). The Biebster is #7 overall. Eminem’s Recovery (Shady/Aftermath/ Interscope) is far ahead of the pack with 741k, followed by Epic’s Sade (502k) and Capitol Nashville’s Lady A (482k). Perry’s bow nudges J/RMG’s Monica (183k) down to #10. The big question about Teenage Dream, of course, is whether it will continue to spawn hit tracks and sell consistently in the manner of Recovery and Need You Now. Advocates assert that Perry’s LP contains five prospective hits compared to the first album’s three, while our own I.B. Bad offered his own prognostication in his Katy-centric column of last week: “[I]t’s safe to assume that Perry’s album will sell steadily during the coming months while continuing to throw off hit tracks.” We shall see… (9/2a)
