APATOW GATHERS ALL-STAR MUSICAL CAST FOR THIS IS 40 SOUNDTRACK

As Revitalization Begins, Capitol Celebrates With Prestige Release Featuring Norah Jones, Fiona Apple, Wilco, Pul Simon, Lindsey Buckingham, Reformed Graham Parker & the Rumour

Capitol has announced the Dec. 11 release of the soundtrack album for Universal Pictures’ new comedy This Is 40 from writer/director Judd Apatow. In this oblique sequel to 2007’s Knocked Up, Paul Rudd and Leslie Mann reprise their roles as the married couple Pete and Debbie. The cast also includes John Lithgow, Megan Fox, Iris Apatow, Maude Apatow, Melissa McCarthy, Jason Segel, Robert Smigel, Charlyne Yi and Albert Brooks.

If anything, the cast of the soundtrack album is even more impressive, with Norah Jones, Fiona Apple, Graham Parker and Lindsey Buckingham contributing original songs, each of them produced by Jon Brion (who was in '90s cult band The Grays with now-Capitol President Dan McCarroll) as well as new tracks from Wilco and Ryan Adams created specifically for the film. The Punch Brothers appear as the backing band on several tracks. The soundtrack album was produced by Apatow and Jonathan Karp.

Apatow, a big fan of Graham Parker’s music, called Parker to ask whether he’d be up for playing a part in the film as well as appearing on the soundtrack. The conversation took place just a couple of weeks after the expat Englishman reformed The Rumour to record Three Chords Good for Primary Wave, which recently added records to its publishing and management operations. Parker described the subsequent chain of events to Bud Scoppa.

“[Apatow] said part of the movie would be about an indie label, and I would be the kind of artist this label would sign,” the artist recalled. “I said, ‘Guess what? I’ve just reformed The Rumour.’ He flew us all out to LA to do a two-day shoot. You can’t make this stuff up. We were onstage together for the first time in 31 years in this fabulous theater with a film crew and excellent lunches—that was the best part.”
