BPI BULLISH ON STREAMING
4/6/23

Streaming has democratized music and is enabling more artists to thrive, according to a new report from British trade body BPI.

Last year, more than 1k artists from the U.K. accumulated over 20m audio streams of their music globally, the study reports. That figure is up around 15% year-on-year.

During the same period, the BPI reveals that more than 400 British acts generated at least 100m streams around the world, while over 200 surpassed 200m. More than 100 U.K. artist’s stream counts topped 500m, including Ella Mai and Cavetown.

The report, The New Music Democracy: How More Artists Are Succeeding From Streaming, also highlights the huge numbers now needed just to have one of the year’s relatively minor streaming hits in the U.K.

The U.K.’s 5,000th biggest hit of 2022, Lana Del Rey’s “The Other Woman” (Polydor/Interscope), was streamed nearly 5m times in 2022, while the 10,000th most popular hit, “Raindrops (Insane)” (Boominati/Republic) by Metro Boomin f/Travis Scott reached 2.5m streams, according to Official Charts data. The year’s biggest smash, “As It Was” (Columbia) by Harry Styles, was streamed 180.9m times.
